STORY OF THE DAY
For all the computer game Starcraft fans out there!

Starcraft Course opened for College - earn credits
Course Description:
UC Berkeley students with an interest in real-time strategy games and the competitive gaming landscape are encouraged to participate in this class.

This course will go in-depth in the theory of how war is conducted within the confines of the game Starcraft. There will be lecture on various aspects of the game, from the viewpoint of pure theory to the more computational aspects of how exactly battles are conducted. Calculus and Differential Equations are highly recommended for full understanding of the course. Furthermore, the class will take the theoretical into the practical world by analyzing games and replays to reinforce decision-making skills and advanced Starcraft theory.

Class will start with lecture and usually include a special discussion topic having to do with the day’s lecture to inspire new and original thought. At the end of lecture, there may be time to analyze student-submitted replays to illustrate a point or to improve analysis. Homework will be assigned at the end of each class and is due at the beginning of each lecture.

Course Learning Objectives and Goals:
What may look like complex topics are just ways we want you to think more deeply about the game to derive a greater satisfaction from playing. Furthermore, this understanding should have applications in real life, to further synthesize new information from limited inferences. The primary goal is for students to learn, enjoy the art of competitive StarCraft, and have fun. Overall, students will be applying critical thinking, quick decision-making, and game theory skills throughout the sessions. Students will also learn what to look for in a replay or game to learn most effectively.

Course Workload:
Each week, students must submit 2 replays of games they played and are willing to analyze in depth. Students are expected to explain the flow of the game, identify the time of several positive and negative moves, and show an understanding of how to overcome mistakes in these replays. Some replays will be reviewed by the class together.

IMAGE OF THE DAY
GI Joe Rise of Cobra released 6 character posters to promote the movie. This was one of my favorite cartoon shows growing up! I'm still not sure about the movie, but so far the posters look promising! Here's a sample.

Delivering Damaged Goods

Picture this: You are the delivery boy. Ding Dong rings the door bell. The purchaser opens the door. He has ordered the worlds finest crystal wine glasses for his wife. He’s excited to see the box with the Crystal Classics brand name on it and signs off on the delivery. He then opens up the box only to find his crystal wine glasses shattered! “Forget the name brand; what’s the point of having these if I can’t use them.” Such is the story of the Toronto Raptors center Jermaine O’Neal. The name carries accolades such as 6 times All-Star and 3 times All-NBA team. All which sound promising and attractive especially to teams that need help at their forward-center position. But what’s the point of signing off on such a delivery if you can’t use it?

A trade seems IMMINENT

Jermaine O’Neal is an attractive piece for playoff teams. Don’t expect teams like the Sacramento Kings or Memphis Grizzlies to make trade offers for Jermaine O’Neal. Although he has great experience and an All-Star presence in the low post he is also expensive and injury prone and does not solve solutions for any young or non-playoff team this year. With the Raptors slowly fading from the playoff picture it might be wise for Bryan Colangelo to move O’Neal’s contract for a contract that would be coming off the books at the end of this year. Most teams want to see if O’Neal is healthy enough to play before pulling the trigger on any blockbuster deals. A trade possibility includes:

Miami Heat: Shawn Marion, Marcus Banks

The Miami Heat need a dominant Center. Especially one that will prove to be serviceable during their playoff runs this year. Basketball usually tends to slow down to a half-court game in the playoffs and the value of Big Men are truly tested and appreciated during this time. This is where O’Neal can truly prove to be beneficial as the Heat could face Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic or Kevin Garnett and the Boston Celtics.

In return the Raptors would get Shawn Marion. Marion would rejoin with a familiar face in Bryan Colangelo, who was Marion’s general manager until he joined the Raptors in 2006.

Financially this move makes sense as well. O’Neal (who makes $21.3 million this season, has a player option for $23 million next season) while Marion’s contract, bit over $17 million will come off the books at the end of the season.

NO INSIDE-OUT GAME
The Raptors must use their strengths wisely and to their advantage! They are tied for 5th in the NBA for 3-point field goal percentage. The Raptors are surrounded by reliable 3-point shooters in Jose Calderon, Anthony Parker, Jason Kapono, and Andrea Bargnani. The Raptors need to start using these guys more thoughtfully with an inside-out game. Jermaine O’Neal is selfish! There is no inside-out game with him. Of course it’s not fair to call a player of his calibre selfish but this is a team game. Plenty of times the ball gets thrown into the paint and O’Neal forces up tough shots. He gets double-teamed and when that happens there is usually a Raptors player open on the perimeter.

well said blotched!! Great comparison too in regards to the world of art. I really agree with your final part of the response "it is about if the pop art he is making- is helping or declining the current state of the art.". With my post - I wasn't saying that I am all for commercial music - I'm just as big of a fan when it comes to conscious and good underground music. But what has gotten to me lately is just all the hate and backlash that people whom can't make it themselves dish out to people that are doing it. Hate doesn't help anything. But not to go off track - I think you provided a real good point with your reply. And since there is always 2 sides of a story - i think the post and the replies covered both!! thanks for the insight!

Neurotect - big ups on checking the blog - hope you keep coming through! I'm not living in the states so I don't know too much about its economy but I see the point that you are making! I bet you enjoyed Bush getting boo'd when he threw the first pitch at the Nationals stadium for their opener. I can see what your saying about the hidden war within the country too. Sounds stupid to say this but Michael Moore movies do help shed some light on how messed up some situations are in the States. I've visited a few times, Philly, New Jerz, new york and Buffalo. And it seems like something has to be done. It seems like the gap between the rich and poor is extending. And I believe that if possible - education can help open more doors for within and if not then outside of the states. Good insight in the reply though. Thanks for sharing that!!

intro, as an artist myself- the pop music rant got my attention. i often find myself complaining about similar differences in the fine art world. i always use this as an example... try comparing BOB ROSS to PICASSO. both are artists right? but you would def say- bob ross is a pop artist. pop art waters down and commercializes a talent- that shouldnt be watered down. it eliminates the need for artists like picasso. especially if you have everybody's grandma thinking their an artist. the art world loses money- when everyone does it. it isnt about the money a lone- the entire cycle of the "arts" existance changes faces. it alters the cycle- the strength and the vision.
its a sad reality- it isnt about wether or not the pop artist is a real artist...it is about if the pop art he is making- is helping or declining the current state of the art. i believe the watered down pop culture is killing the finer-deeper-unspoken beauty of the original art forms.

Wow this blog is very informative on many levels.. Noticed the topic on education and alot of it is needed especially in today's society.. But people like George Bush and so on, are ruining our way of how we manage our economic status of earning any kind of education.. And not only that, but because there is such a demand or peer pressure and nortoriety, there will always be ignorance and non-conscience action that debilitates any chance for education in the future.. Not only are we in war with Iraq but were in a hidden war within this country, and if we don't all see this as an issue than it will soon be too late to do anything about it. Things are so chaotic though it probably is too late.. But anyway I'm glad your urging people to become more conscience and focused on the priorities that need to be addressed for their own well bein...
03/22/2008

hey blotch - thanks for checking out the post - i think a way to combat that is starting to be conscious. Conscious of what is working against us and what can/have to do to make a chance. Majority of the population is almost like blind sheep just fitting in, getting comfortable with what they have - or just settle for what is. I think becoming conscious is a good first step.
But I hear you though - especially with what you said about the jobs not even being available. Its really the case of the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. I'ma come back and drop a longer reply in the next day - to what you said, cause I agree with it and its very important. Looks like the middle class is slowly disappearing. But that shouldn't mean that its time to give up - what we do as humans best is we adapt. We've gone through world wars, ice ages, etc...be back!
03/22/2008

*props on attempts to educate. everyone seperates our cultures..(canadian-american) but we're fighting an epidemic. an epidemic of ignorance and greed. the seven deadly sins uniting.

how can u combat that?
03/22/2008

to comment on your education posts.....

the sad reality is- the pop culture has dilluded to many people our age and everyone younger than us, that money comes quick and easy. i mean you can even peep movies from like around 1996 - the cars were "normaL" average everyday cars. nothin fancy or outrageous. now- even the street cops rocking mercedes benz. i kno its a random point-but it says a lot about how the cultures have changes within less than a decade. which is nuts to me.

sadly- intro- when i look around where im from. the kids dont even have those lame ass ho hum factory jobs. they cant even deal with that. most of them dont work- they sell drugs and eventually end up doing them. cus the illusion of fame and money- is unrealistic. but people dont get that.
03/22/2008

ratio wise....only about 15 percent of us were meant to hold any kind of wealth. nothing is going to change that ratio. only thing is-- the other 85 % isnt even making it to middle income anymore.

education is everything you said- i agree-fully.
but people are so confused about what real and what unreal is.

the future..........is bleek.
